ARCHITECTURE |
|
In general, architecture is not included
in the category of fine art-even if the end results is appreciated
because of its beauty-because in architecture, one is faced with
rules on technique and feeling of space.
the function of the architecture it self, such as the activities
it supports, or for whom it was built, will influence its form and
expression. it can be said that architecture is the result of a
process based on a diverse range of necessities (art, technique,
and feeling), used to fulfill one of the five basic necessities
of the human being (clothing, food, wall-space for activity-architecture,
health, and education). In the world of traditional balinese architecture,
there are many laws originating from custom and religious philosophy,
which must be understood and followed by traditional architect (Balinese
architects are called the Undagi).
Thus, an Undagi is regarded highly because he must be able to understand
art, composition, proportion, technique, feeling of space, religiou
sphilosophy, the customary law (awig-awig), and at the same times,
must understand the various mantra of worship, for an Undagi is
given the power to carry out religous acts when he begin his works
(a ritual called the Ngeruak Karang).
